If you've been following Captain America: Civil War, you know the Sokovia Accords (a variant of the Super Hero Registration Act) play an important role in the coming movie. In fact, it's a role as important as Vichy France in World War II.
"Wait, what?" you're most likely asking. Yes, Vichy France. The trailer for Captain America: Civil War reminds me a great deal of the treacherous part of the French government during WWII. We all know about the Nazi persecution of the Jews and other 'undesirables,' ranging from communists to homosexuals to the mentally ill. What fewer of us may know is that part of the French government cooperated with the Nazi occupiers after the invasion, and was known as Vichy France (where it was located.) One of the notable facts about this lesser known aspect of France during WWII was its conformity to Nazi racial purification ideals. Yes, Vichy France supported the Nazi persecution of Jews.
So why does the new Captain America movie bring this to mind? Easy. Cap's fighting against what should be a freedom-loving organization/country which is attempting to force every superhero/super entity to be registered to the government. Those who don't fit the norm are required to be ID'ed by the government, whether they wish to or not, or else face consequences. Hmm. Sounds like something the Nazi's did with the Jews. Star of David, anyone?
"The Sokovia Accords are the MCU's version of the Superhuman Registration Act that powered Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's Civil War comic back in 2006." The arc resulted in an Iron Man on the side of the government who did some rather nasty stuff. Sorry, no spoilers. I'm curious to see what happens next. S.H.I.E.L.D. is already keeping an eye on quite a few people with abilities, demonstrated in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The question I have is, why then are the accords being created?
Well, considering that "a nation in Eastern Europe devastated by a creation of the Avengers, and another international incident teased in the Captain America: Civil War synopsis that's yet to be revealed." S.H.I.E.L.D. has been somewhat inept at stopping some of these big events from happening (like being infiltrated by Hydra), but that doesn't mean people should be forced to be registered.
I suppose the good thing is that this is entirely fiction. It's not like this could happen in real life, right?
