In just four weeks, Star Wars VII imperially marches into theaters everywhere, but what you may not know is that the new Star Wars movie may already be setting box office records.
In fact, not only is the movie setting box office records even before it's release, it's blowing past them. Before advance ticket sales went live, the record holder for pre-sales was The Dark Knight Rises. Since then, Star War VII has sold over $50 million worth of tickets, more than double the previous record for advance sales. "That's double the previous record set by The Dark Knight Rises in 2012 with $25 million. Imax alone accounts for a third of all ticket sales, according to sources."
If you are worried that all theatres around you are going to be sold out opening night, "while there are widespread reports of sold out theaters in certain locations, and nasty overpriced eBay re-sellers, there are loads of seats still available across the continent." And if you wisely decide to go after the opening weekend, you probably won't have a problem finding a spot. Who am I kidding? We're all going to the midnight release.
And while Star Wars VII is already breaking records, analysts expect it to do even better. "Box-office analyst Phil Contrino is so confident in The Force Awakens' opening numbers that he's already predicting the film will surpass Avatar's previously held record." Not only that, but "'It's in the same spot as Avatar, which played and played and played. Force Awakens will hit $1 billion without blinking. If it's really good, it could cross $2 billion.'"
I certainly hope it does well. I've loved the Star Wars universe since I was a kid, and I was fortunate to see the prequels at an early enough age not to be as horrified as more experienced fans were. I hope kids my age have as good an experience as I did so we'll get yet another generation of Star Wars fans. Of course, this time we won't have to wait a decade or two before getting new films.
So how do you think Star Wars VII: The Fore Awakens will do? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below.
