On his first hole of this weekend's OHL Classic at Makayoba at the El Camaleon Golf Club in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, Thomas Aiken hit a hole in one. This was the first ace to start a tournament since 1990. In a year with amazing majors and emergence of dominant players, Aiken's ace is the coolest moment of the year.
While Aiken couldn't improve on this momentum, finishing the round +3, his hole in one was still an incredible accomplishment. Thanks in part to the strange set up of the course, which has a Par 3 on the 10th Hole, which Aiken started his round from.
Aiken actually birdied the next two holes, but unfortunately for him, followed that up by going +7 over the last 15 holes, which could be considered a miracle considering he had a quadruple bogey during his round.
Had Jordan Spieth completed the season's Grand Slam, it would be the best moment of the entire sports year, however due to his losses at the Open Championship and PGA Championship events, the hole in one has to be seen as the coolest moment of the entire PGA season.
The last golfer before Aiken to start an event off with an ace was Mike Sullivan, who began the 1990 Buick Classic with an ace.
