South Carolina golfer Dustin Johnson is quickly becoming the answer to the question, "Who is the best golfer that still hasn't won a major title?" Johnson went into last Sunday with a tie for the lead in this year's U.S. Open, and had a chance to win the first major of his career. Johnson and Jordan Spieth battled all day, but Johnson's misses on the 18th green cost him the title. This was the latest in a string of bad luck for Johnson during golf's most prestigious events.
With his great plays throughout the week, Johnson had set himself in good position to be able to hold the trophy come Sunday night. He was in complete control until he got to the 18th green. Johnson had a chance for eagle, but ended up three putting and paring the hole to give the victory to Spieth. USA Today For The Win explains that this is not the first time Johnson has experienced late troubles in majors:
"It's happened before after all. This was the same DJ who once missed out on a playoff in the PGA Championship because he forgot the rules on the 72nd hole and grounded his club in a hazard. This is the same DJ who held a three-shot lead entering the final round of the 2010 U.S. Open and shot an 82. Some golfers have it, some don't. Johnson has most of "it," but when it comes to conquering the knee-knocking moments, he doesn't."
Johnson talked about his performance at the Open to Fox Sports:
"I'm disappointed, disappointed that I three-putted the last hole. Other than that, I had a damn good week. I'm happy with the way I played. ... I had a chance to win, again, a major on Sunday. I thought I handled myself very well. I hit the shots when I needed to. So I know what it takes to get it done, it's real simple: I need to get in the hole faster."
