Joss Whedon, the creative genius behind Marvel's 'The Avengers' and 'Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog,' has made a fair bit of profit off both. But which movie made him more money?
During the 2007-2008 writer's strike (it was horrible), Joss Whedon teamed up with Nathan Fillion, Felicia Day, Neil Patrick Harris, and Simon Helberg (Howard Wolowitz from The Big Bang Theory) to create what has since become a cult-classic, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Which if you haven't seen it and like musicals, is a must-see. Filled with humor and sadness, it's a great musical. "Whedon himself funded Dr. Horrible with the budget being around $200,000, allowing himself to have full creative control free from studio interference."
And to top it off, Whedon has "made more money from his independently financed 2008 Internet musical than he did from writing and directing Marvel's first blockbuster "Avengers" movie.
Considering that at the time Dr. Horrible's was released, the internet wasn't as popular a place for movies. Rather odd how much things have changed in the last seven years.
Felicia Day actually was the reason behind Whedon's choice to release the film on the internet. "Whedon cited Day's web series The Guild as the source of the model he followed." And it was an excellent choice. Both parties benefited from this type of release. I actually discovered The Guild due to watching Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.
The movie was released over three night's during July 2008, and since has been picked up by iTunes, Hulu, and finally the CW. You can also get your own copy of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog on DVD or Blu-ray.
So have you seen Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog? What did you think of the musical?
