Weekend Box Office Bombs: Sandra Bullock’s ‘Our Brand is Crisis,' Bradley Cooper’s ‘Burnt’?

Our Brand is Crisis and Burnt were offbeat projects that weren't going to light the box office on fire, but their top notch casts were supposed to help draw people in. Our Brand is Crisis starred Sandra Bullock and Billy Bob Thornton, and was produced by George Clooney. Burnt starred Bradley Cooper. Both bombed at the box office.

Our Brand is Crisis surprised most of all, only drawing a paltry $1.1 million its first day. It was the lowest total of any Sandra Bullock film. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film was a pet project of Bullock. From the Hollywood Reporter, "The political film, also starring Billy Bob Thornton, was a passion project for Bullock and producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov. It has been ravaged by critics, however, while audiences gave it a C+ CinemaScore. Warners co-financed the $28 million movie with Participant Media.'' It is another miss for Warners, who has been in a slump, of recent.

NPR had this to note about the Sandra Bullock film, "The film becomes a Sandra Bullock vehicle, and while it's buoyed by her typical comic aplomb, it loses sight of the bigger picture. In that, Our Brand is Crisis mirrors the campaign: A victory for one person can sometimes mean a loss for everyone else."

As for Bradley Cooper, his film, Burnt, made a paltry $1.8 million at the box office, and projects out to make $5.5 million. The web site Project Casting had this to say about the film, "But, this should not come as a surprise. Rotten Tomatoes reports that Burnt offers a few spoonfuls of compelling culinary drama, but they're lost in a watery goulash dominated by an unsavory main character and overdone clichés." And, the movie currently has a 29% rotten rating on their web site."
