Jerry Heller, the original/former N.W.A. manager has filed a defamation lawsuit against those involved in the film 'Straight Outta Compton.' So why are they being sued?
Well, according to Heller, he's been turned into the bad guy of the film, something he takes personal offence at. And perhaps he actually has a reason to be a little bit ticked off. After all, Heller "helped the Compton rap group skyrocket in popularity nationwide in the 1980s after inking a business deal with Wright."
However, I think Heller may be a bit more greedy than need be. The "former Ruthless Records exec filed suit against Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy-E's estate, Universal, and pretty much anyone involved" to the tune of $110 million dollars. And evidently Heller's been planning this since before the movie even came out.
Jerry Heller's plan was to "be there in the front row with my lawyer and looking to make sure it is an accurate movie." And according to him, it isn't. In fact, he wasn't even consulted on the creation of the film. Personally, considering that he's featured in the film as a fairly prominent figure, that's actually a valid consideration.
He argues that "he never withheld money from Cube, was never fired by Eazy, and 'producers used his book without permission for pivotal scenes, including the one where Suge Knight strong-armed Eazy-E into signing away his rights to Death Row." If that's actually the case, well, perhaps his suit is justified.
Albeit, considering the film made about $199,589,672 worldwide, I think the amount he's suing for is overkill. And the lawsuit doesn't even cover all potential attacks that Heller may be hitting the film with. Rumor has it he might even be going after some of the profits of the film as well, and the more profitable the film, the more mone Heller might make. He might actually turn more of a profit off the film than the film made if the court finds in his favor.
So what do you think of the situation? Is Jerry Heller justified in seeking reparations? Has he gone too far? Tell us what you think in the comments section below!
