The short-lived TV series Constantine may have developed a cult following, but NBC went the cancellation route after just one season. Here's what show creator David Goyer had to say.
"In retrospect, I don't think it should have been on NBC. I think it was the wrong channel and I'm sure they probably agree with that as well."
It's quite unfortunate for those of us who are fans of the DC Comics Hellblazer. I think it's quite a pity that NBC cancelled it as well. Many fans protested the cancellation and even signed petitions for NBC to bring it back, but alas, just like many other great shows (hi, Firefly), ratings must go on. Interestingly, the series might actually have done better if it had just been in the right place.
"We almost doubled our numbers in DVR numbers, but they weren't quite there in network television in counting those metrics. If it had been on a basic cable channel, it could still be on," Goyer said.
While I'm one of those nuts that likes studying the relationship of advertising, DVR, and live broadcast, to sum it up, it wasn't making enough money because advertisers don't like DVR so much. After all, who wants to waste time on commercials when you can just skip them?
On the plus side, the character Constantine isn't gone forever. He'll be making a major cameo appearance on DC Comics' Arrow this November.
"He's set to show up in the fifth episode of the season, "Haunted," and his episode has been described as more of a crossover between the Arrow and Constantine universes than anything else."
I'm certainly looking forward to seeing some more of Constantine soon. I'm a big Supernatural fan (even though it's gone downhill), so seeing another demon hunter back in action will be quite fun.
What do you think of Constantine? Could the show have done better on another network besides NBC (please don't say Fox)? Should it have been cancelled?
