Joker Jared Leto Channeled Marilyn Manson for ‘Suicide Squad’?

Many of his fellow Suicide Squad cast members were blown away by Jared Leto's take on the Joker, but veteran comic book writer Grant Morrison claims the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman is really just doing his best Marilyn Manson. According to the latest gossip news updates, Morrison recently admitted that Leto called him to ask for advice before starting the movie, and that's when he gave the Dallas Buyer's Club Oscar winner the idea of channeling the iconic 90s rocker for his performance as the Batman supervillain. Regardless of his inspiration, everyone from Will Smith to Margot Robbie has praised Leto for bringing something special to the DC classic.

It would appear that Jared Leto's Joker made quite the impression on his Suicide Squad costars.

In a recent interview with HHB Media, Corina Calderan, who plays a mysterious character named Grace in the film, explained that Leto was just as riveting when the cameras weren't rolling (via UpRoxx):

"As the Joker, he is brilliant...I was amazed, just fascinated, mesmerized watching him. Even when he was going to get his mic checked in between scenes."

Will Smith echoed similar sentiments during his chat with Beat 1 -- explaining that Leto stayed so deep in character during the shoot, that he really couldn't say he had even met the eccentric superstar (via Vanity Fair):

"I've never actually met Jared Leto. We worked together for six months and we've never exchanged a word outside of 'Action!' and 'Cut!'

"I literally have not met him yet. So, the first time I see him will be 'Hey, Jared. What's up?'

"He was all in on the Joker."

For all his over the top behavior on the set, legendary comic book writer Grant Morris seemed to suggest in his Comic Heroes magazine interview that Jared was really just doing his best impersonation of Marilyn Manson (via Games Reader):

"It looks quite interesting...[Leto] called me to talk about his approach to the character and I steered him in a few directions.

"I'm keen to see if anything other than slicked back hair and the Marilyn Manson vibe made it into his performance."

While Morrison's remarks don't exactly explain that live rat that Leto reportedly sent Margot Robbie -- if true -- it certainly takes away from the performance's mystic.
