For years, Nike has been trying to recreate the Air Mag sneakers with power laces as seen in Back to the Future II. Now, on Back to the Future day, Nike has announced that they have made the shoes, and they are great.
This is a great day for Back to the Future fans. Not only is the film celebrating its 30th anniversary, but today Nike has announced that one of the biggest props from the trilogy has become reality. Today Nike has finally cracked a design problem, and announced that they officially created power laces.
In 2011, Nike recreated the infamous Air Mags for an auction that benefitted the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. The 2011 auction raised over $4.7 million, and was doubled through the Brin Wojcicki Challenge. Fans longed to have their very own pair of Air Mags. The only thing that these 2011 Air Mags were lacking from their movie counterpart was power laces.
It appears that Nike is trying to capitalize on the sale of these Air Mag II's by also putting them up for auction. According to ABCNews, "The number of pairs that will be made available was not disclosed. The shoes will be auctioned off, and the beneficiary once again will be the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research."
Here is a clip from Michael J. Fox's Twitter when Nike presented him with his very own pair Air Mags.
It is really awesome to think that today, October 21, 2015 Michael J. Fox was presented with his very own pair of Nike Air Mags on the same exact day that Marty, Doc and Jennifer traveled into the future where Marty got Nike Air Mags. These newer Air Mags will surely cost a hefty amount, so get ready to sell your house, or tell your kid set on Stanford that they will be attending community college instead.
