Earlier this year, fans were thrilled to find out that Spider-Man would finally be making an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony inked a deal with Marvel that would allow the character to crossover, essentially solidifying that this is the Golden Age of comic book movies. There were some casualties in the deal: Spider-Man would be recast (canning Andrew Garfield as the web-slinger), and the Sinister Six movie and Venom films were assumed to be cancelled in the fallout. Now there comes news that a Sinister Six movie could still be made, if Marvel wants to make one.
The Sinister Six film was set to be directed by Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods, The Martian), and looked to be almost a ready-to-go idea. VCPost says:
Director Drew Goddard voted himself out of movie Daredevil in order to write and direct Sony's Sinister Six. Before the movie was cancelled, Goddard reportedly had initial plans for the film's characters, setting, and even actors to play for the role which were spilled in leaked emails that swirled online.
According to the emails, the notorious six villains to star in the film would have been Doctor Octopus, the Vulture, Sandman, Mysterio, Black Cat, and Spider-Man himself. In the movie, Doctor Ock would have been the character that fans would have rooted for but still end up as Spider-Man's rival, just like the character of Michael Corleone in The Godfather Trilogy.
Whether these would have been the final villains included in the film or not is a mystery. There are a few different versions circling around on the internet. One thing is certain, this film would have been a big production, with a huge budget. At the time, Sony was looking to make this a villain-centric film modeled after Marvel's successful Avengers film.
IO9 sat down with Drew Goddard to talk about his upcoming film The Martian, and he talked about his very specific vision for the Sinister Six film, one that would fit into the Spider-Man continuity well.
Per IO9, he said: "My vision of that movie was a summer annual, so you didn't have to worry about continuity. It was just, 'We take Peter, put him on an adventure, we put him back in his life.' I intentionally wanted a movie that didn't have to worry about mythology and continuity. It was important to me to make a movie that could stand on its own. So the good news is, you know, [laughs], it slots in very well to any plan anybody ever wants. We just need to let a couple years go by, I think."
Goddard talks a little about his excitement for the project and his motivation, as well:
"The tricky part about all this is I love this plan," he said. "I love that you get to see Spider-Man in Marvel movies. I think that's a great thing. I'm on board with that decision because as a fan that's what I want. So who knows what the future holds? This is Hollywood, man, you've gotta play the long game."
The Sinister Six movie was assumed to be a movie about the villains, something akin to the Suicide Squad. This is not so says Goddard: "It was a Spider-Man movie. It was the giant, epic Spider-Man movie of my dreams."
The best part about this is that Goddard worked with Marvel on Netflix's Daredevil, and Marvel is elated to have Spider-Man back. Does this mean that we could potentially see a Sinister Six movie? I hope so. With Marvel's golden touch, it could be a big film.
