Production has officially wrapped on the sequel to Independence Day. Titled Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel looks to expand on the world established in the first film. The situations are more complex, and the aliens are bigger and badder. While out promoting his latest film, Stonewall, Director Roland Emmerich spoke with Collider about ID4 2 and talked about how the human race will face this new alien threat: "Well, it is only like one of the hives, like kind of moving around. [Laughs] What we did this time, we tried to expand the universe, too. It's not as simple as the last one because you cannot make it as simple as the last one. Also it's a little bit about what happened to our world when you know that they are coming back. We had twenty years to come together as a planet and to build incredible things to have a little more even fight."
Independence Day: Resurgence will be digging into the plot a lot more than we saw in the original film. We can expect better character growth, and and deeper, more involved plot. The official synopsis of the film, taken from the film's official website is, "We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction."

The film hosts a lot of the original cast. In fact, most of the original cast is returning for the film. ID4-2 adds newcomers Jessie Usher, Liam Hemsworth, and Maika Monroe to the cast, although the film is missing one big star from the first one. Will Smith will not return for the sequel. Emmerich talks about the casting process, saying, "You don't expect this from a movie like this, but we have a super-fresh, incredible cast. I take the casting process very, very seriously. I cast two young actors (Jessie Usher and Maika Monroe), and they were voted on by Variety as two of the 10 most promising, up and coming actors. Maika is incredible in our film and she became a friend, honest to God. I love that girl.
Emmerich goes on to say, "Also Jessie Usher is incredible, and Liam (Hemsworth) is probably the nicest man on Earth. I always said it was Channing Tatum, but I think he may have a little competition there. Movies like Anonymous and Stonewall helped me to be more forward with actors, and they are actually so thankful to get feedback."
Independence Day: Resurgence will change the game as this time, the aliens will bring the big guns in its hope to annihilate the human race once and for all. We can only hope that the finished film is as great as the original film was. There is a large amount of nostalgia that comes with this film. It should do really well at the box office banking on this alone, as I am sure most people have fond memories of the first Independence Day.
There was some controversy on July 4th, when the world thought that we would see the trailer drop. Unfortunately no trailer came. Roland Emmerich spoke to Cinema Blend about when we could get a possible release date for the trailer. "Emmerich revealed that we'll most likely receive a trailer this December! It will probably be happening around the Christmas season.Well, there you have it! You can expect the first trailer for Independence Day Resurgence during the final weeks of the year!
Independence Day: Resurgence will be an exercise in whether or not a sequel to a film will work, when the time in between original and sequel is over 10 years. This has been the hardest thing for Hollywood to pull of. The latest success story of this is Jurassic World. A film that basically reinvigorated a franchise that was waining. This is an occurrence that we should start to see very soon.
Independence Day: Resurgence is currently set for a June 24th 2016 release.
