Todd Gurley was the St. Louis Rams top pick this year and is returning from a torn ACL. It is possible that he could return in Week 2 against the Redskins.
Needless to say, this news is huge for the Rams and they can't wait until their rookie running back can get on the field. He is the type of player that can completely change their offense and they need him to help balance the offense for new quarterback Nick Foles. After knocking off the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1, the sky is the limit for the Rams this season and there is quite a bit of hope and excitement surrounding the franchise.
According to the official Rams' Twitter account, Gurley was a full participant in practice today and is questionable for Sunday's game.
Coming back from a torn ACL is not an easy thing, especially for a running back that depends on his ability to cut. Gurley has been attacking his rehab process extremely hard and it appears that he will make his return to the field for his NFL debut in the next couple of weeks. Seeing a player work his way back from a torn ACL as vigorously as Gurley has simply leaves a team with confidence that he is mentally ready as well as physically.
During his 2014 season with the Georgia Bulldogs, Gurley ended up carrying the football 123 times for 911 yards and nine touchdowns. He put those numbers up in just six games, which shows how dynamic he is capable of being.
Even if Gurley does play in Week 2, there isn't much hope that he is going to end up being the workhorse. He would likely receive around 10-15 carries throughout the game, perhaps more depending on how he looks and feels. Tre Mason is also a full go for Week 2, so there is a good chance he would see a good amount of action as well.
Simply getting Gurley's feet wet in his first game would be the point of bringing him back this early. Every rookie needs experience and playing against a fairly poor team in the Redskins would give him that valuable experience.
Gurley is an extremely exciting prospect, especially after all of the comparisons that he received coming out of college in the NFL Draft process. He was compared to both Adrian Peterson and Marshawn Lynch, which would be very favorable comparisons if he can live up to the hype.
Expect to see Gurley make his debut in the next couple of weeks and don't be surprised if he's active in Week 2 against Washington. This is a big step in the right direction and there are plenty of reasons for the Rams and their fan base to be excited moving forward into the 2015 season.
