It looks like Patrick Dempsey may get the last laugh after all, despite Shonda Rhimes unceremoniously killing off his character on Grey's Anatomy last season without a tenth of the fan fair reserved for Sandra Oh's year-long goodbye in Season 10. According to the latest gossip news updates, McDreamy is already being offered a brand new TV show that will combine medical work with his real-life love of racing to form the core of the series, instead of punishing him for it. Katherine Heigl has rumored to be tapped to return as Dempsey's replacement, but the State of Affairs actress has coyly claimed that it is just not in the cards.
Upon losing their beloved McDreamy after more than a decade with the handsome surgeon, fans of Shonda Rhimes' Grey's Anatomy felt so betrayed by Patrick Dmepsey so callously being written off the show that the admired showrunner had to eventually explain herself (via E! News):
"Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character-for Meredith, for me and for the fans.
"His loss will be felt by all. Now, Meredith and the entire Grey's Anatomy family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life.
"The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: the carousel never stops turning."
Whatever her true feeling may be, the behind-the-scenes source that the National Enquirer spoke to explained that Dempsey already has a similar show all lined up that should suit him far better than Grey's ever did:
"A major network's offered him more money than ANY actor on TV to star in a dream series deal -- a medical drama centering on Patrick's passion: Professional car racing!"
While that is great news for Dempsey, Grey's fans are still curious who Rhimes is going to eventually bring in to take Dr. Derek Shepherd's place.
Katherine Heigl recently told Entertainment Tonight that despite the rumors she would definitely not be returning to the show -- noting that she could hardly envision the series without Dempsey anyways:
"I just can't imagine the show without McDreamy; I just can't.
"It's just so hard to picture."
Well, hopefully we will all be able to just pretend that McDreamy has moved to a more racing centric practice on a different network soon enough.
