Tony Stewart was once a dominant force on the circuit but has stalled out the past few years. The three-time Sprint Cup Champion is on a cold streak that has lasted almost two full years. In those years, he has had to continue searching for answers through injuries and wrecks, one that left Kevin Ward Jr dead. Good friend and Indy car legend A.J. Foyt understands what is happening with Stewart and has offered to give him advice.
Foyt believes the main reason Stewart has not been able to regain even relevance at the sport he once dominated has to do with his wreck with Kevin Ward Jr. During a dirt track race in 2013, Stewart ran into Keven Ward while he was outside of his vehicle walking on the track. Foyt tells USA Today that the death of Ward is something that has never left Stewarts mindset:
"We talk quite a bit, off and on. I think that accident he had is really bugging Tony a lot more than people know. Where he got hurt, too, and that other accident. I don't care who you are. Stuff like that bothers you a lot more and I think Tony is really soft-hearted. It's something that happened. It just happens. It's happened with a lot of racing accidents and I think Tony is taking it a lot harder than people realize. As far as him having the ability, he has as much ability as anyone out there."
With issues like that still haunting the mind of the great driver, it is no wonder he hasn't taken the checkered flag in almost two years. Cleveland tells of the Stewart remark he gave nascar.com about his feelings towards his recent struggles behind the wheel:
"Its like I'm in the middle of a calculus equation and I didn't take pre-calculus."
