Anthony Davis is turning into one of the best players in the league, and he is without a head coach. The New Orleans Pelicans open head coaching vacancy is going to be one of the more sought after basketball coaching opportunities this summer. The chance to be at the ground floor with one of the youngest and most complete players going into his prime will be an enticing job for even the most marquee coaching talent. Many speculated that Davis' former coach John Calipari would be interested in the job, but he has turned down the notion as of now.
University of Kentucky head coaching giant John Calipari turned down the opportunity to return to the pros and the chance to be reunited with some of his favorite recent players. The New York Post tells of the Facebook response from Caliparri regarding where he will be coaching next season:
"Even though Anthony and Tyreke are in New Orleans, I have no interest in coaching the Pelicans or any other coaching position. I have a great job and I'm happy at Kentucky."
Callipari's contract with the university could possibly be one of the main reasons he is happy to stay in Kentucky instead of another chance at the NBA. He is set to make almost double what the reported salary offer from the Pelicans was. With his unsuccessful (and short) NBA stint and former players becoming superstars, Caliparri should think twice before deciding his mind. The Advocate explains how rare this opportunity is to take over an Anthony Davis-led team:
"Analysis and risk management consultant Jeff Asher said that since 2000, only 21 coaches have walked into their introductory team meeting by greeting a returning player who finished the previous season ranked in the top 10 in Player Efficiency Rating, the formula that combines nearly every traditional statistic. Davis led the NBA in PER last year."
Who will end up taking over the Pelicans head coaching job? Will Davis keep blossoming into the superstar he is projected to become? Tell us your thoughts below.
