CC Sabathia was once one of the most feared pitchers in all of baseball, dating back to his time with the Cleveland Indians and his short stint with the Milwaukee Brewers. The hefty southpaw pitcher was able to overpower most hitters with his variety of pitches. His first two years for the New York Yankees were just as dominant as his previous seasons, but every year since has seen his win total go down while his ERA has climbed up. The demise has come quick and painful for the proud Yankee.
He has shown flashes of his old self at times, but overall his performance is not one that is deserving of the contract under which he is playing. He was signed as an ace, and that's what the Yankees need of him if they are to continue making their way back into this year's playoffs. Sabathia puts it bluntly to The New York Daily News about the struggles of his past outing and this year in general:
"It's frustrating, especially when we haven't been playing well, and you want to put an end to it...I couldn't do that today. I couldn't get a pitch to get us out of that inning."
The start of this season looked so promising with Sabathia losing some weight in the offseason and being healthier than years past. None of that matters if he can't find his pitches. Sabathia explained to The New York Post his frustration behind his pitches not working:
"Balls were up. Everything, two-seamers. The cutter was still good. The changeup wasn't there. I just think the fastballs were up and they played pepper."
There is still a lot of season left and if it continues down this path for Sabathia, the Yankees will have to once again watch the postseason from their couches.
Do you think Sabathia has anything left? What moves do you think the Yankees are going to have to make? Tell us your thoughts below.
