A new anime to keep an eye out for is Death Parade. The new anime, from Funimation Studios, is set to release in the winter of 2015. Spoiler Alert! The flick takes place in a sort of purgatory bar. Convention says that after death, humans go to either heaven or hell. However, for some, they arrive on the doorstep of Quindecim, a bar tended by the mysterious white-haired Decim.
These arrivals have no memory of death. Decim challenges the new arrivals to the Death Game, where they wager their lives and ultimately reveal their true selves. Decim is the judge. He has final say and decides who wins and who loses, who lives and dies. His hobby is making mannequins that resemble guests he previously judged. .
When two people die at the same time they get sent to the bar and play a random game to decide whose soul gets reincarnated and whose gets sent into the void.
The website Anime Planet is less than impressed by Death Parade. In a review of it, the site had this to say:
"Basically you waste your time watching a dozen episodes of people getting manipulated, driven insane, and then judged unfairly by a bogus system. Sure, you can claim that one of the themes of the series is about pointing out that the system is unfair. But it still makes you wonder, what was the point of spending most of the series in those stand alone cases, full of overblown dramatization, if in the end they all get the middle finger. “
Funimation is adapting the Japanese series for American audiences, and it is set to debut in the winter of 2015. Despite Anime Planet’s negative take, it looks intriguing. Funimation rarely picks stinkers so it should definitely be given the benefit of the doubt.
