K-Pop band EXO's lastest album Exodus created a little history recently. It flew up the US charts before finally settling at #90 on the US Billboard charts, making it the highest K-Pop album to debut on the charts. Support in the United States was big for the album and its sales. More than 6,000 albums were sold in its first week of release in the US alone.
According to Billboard.com's contributor Jeff Benjamin, Exodus enjoyed the largest sales week in America of any K-Pop band. It did strong, as well, on other Billboard charts. "Call Me Baby," the band's first single climbed as high as #2 in the WDS charts. Five other songs, such as "El Dorado" and "Exodus" populated the top 20.
Exodus, the album, has been displaying superb staying power on the Bilboard World Album chart, where it has been on the Top 10 for the past six weeks.
The band clinched the #1 spot on the said chart back in April. While sales have plateaued, it has come down to the current #9, it has not plummeted as fast, only slipping two places from #7 the previous week.
The album's success is welcome news and says the band is still popular, despite controversies surround its Chinese contingent, such as Tao's reported departure from the group and Lay's medical misfortunes.
As well, the band's debut single "Call Me Baby" debuted at number 98 in the Canada's Hot 100 Singles list. Reportedly, the single was streamed 230,000 times. Until that point, Psy was the only K-Pop act to even chart in the top 100.
In spite of the controversies, EXO continue to push forward and album sales more than reflect the product they are putting out there.
