The Dallas Cowboys are a franchise of dynasties and a well-respected lineage that must be embraced by the newer generation to bring the team back into Super Bowl contention. One of the younger players that will be needing to buy into the philosophy, is recent troubled draftee Randy Gregory. Cowboys' legends Michael Irvin and Charles Haley are stepping to the forefront to mentor Gregory with his adjustment to the NFL.
One of the more storied numbers on the defensive side of the Cowboys would have to be number 94. 94 has belonged to greats like Demarcus Ware and mentor Haley, with Gregory now being bestowed the lofty expectations of living up to that number. Haley has already met the rookie, with Gregory telling ESPN of his encounter:
"We obviously wear the same number, so I'm sure he expects a certain level of play from me. He gave me some advice about the future, and, hopefully, I can make him proud, make the organization proud and make myself proud."
Irvin, who excelled on the other side of the field with the offense, is looking to bring some different insight to help Gregory with his transition. Irvin has had his own prior issues off the field, and knows he can connect with Gregory as he told the Star Telegram:
"I try to build relationships with all the guys and say I'm here as a resource. You want to give them some help. I'm a firm believer that the game of football saves lives. It saved my life. There is no telling where these guys would end up."
He also added:
"Guys seem more comfortable talking to a guy who had situations himself," Irvin said. "There is no indictment from me. I had my problems. Randy knows I'm saying it from the right place. The kid has been sincere."
It looks like the Cowboys have been the right landing spot for the troubled Gregory with assistance from such team legends.
What do you think about the drafting of Gregory by the Cowboys? What about the inclusion of Irvin as a mentor? Tell us what you think.
