Bollywood bad boy Salman Khan doesn't only talk the talk when it comes to being a bad boy, he walks the walks the walk. The popular Khan has appeared in over 80 films during his nearly three decade long career and he has crossed all genres. No one ever doubted that Khan was a talented actor, but his litany of transgressions reveal a deeply dark side that has, more than a couple of times, caused him to have run ins with the law.
One notable incident was his former girlfriend's accusations of abuse. Another occurred in 2002 when he drove his SUV over homeless pedestrians sleeping on the pavement in Mumbai, killing one and injuring four others. That incident also underlined the economic culture in Mumbai, a city that has more billionaires and homeless people than any other city in the world. It is a growing problem in India that the ultra-rich have growing impunity in India.
But the law of averages had to catch up with him and it did, in a way at least. On Wednesday, Kahn was found guilty hit and run and was sentenced to five years in prison though, for the moment, he is free on bail.
Despite these rather high profile court cases, Khan's popularity has remained high. He commands a mostly young, male fan club that is extremely loyal. They like that he is still single and his fans affectionately call him brother.
Despite the darkness, there is another side of Kahn. Actress Preity Zinta has called him one of the kindest men in the industry and is always ready to help actors out. How this jives with the man who was just convicted of vehicular manslaughter remains to be seen.
After the verdict, Salman Kahn's lawyers swiftly appealed and, if nothing else, will try to argue down the sentence length.
