Fans of the Dragon Ball series can rejoice. A new series, Dragon Ball Super, the first in 18 years will go into production this year. Toei Animation Studios announced the new series, which will pick up where the film Dragon Ball Z Resurrection F ended is set to debut in Japan sometime this July. Dragon Ball Super will start several years after and follow up on Goku's battle with Majin as he attempts to keep Earth's fragile peace.
The new series will be overseen by original creator Akira Toriyama and will be produced by Fuji Television. The last Dragon Ball series was Dragon Ball GT, which ended in 1997. Though fans of the Dragon Ball canon have been somewhat ambivalent to the GT series as the Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama was not a part of the creative process of the series. For Dragon Bat Super, Toriyama will be heavily involved in the creative process.
From the beginning, as the sequel to the immensely popular Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z took the world by storm and expanded to about every medium imaginable, spawning movies, music, toys and a countless number of video games and, as with every anime seemingly, a trading card game.
As well, Dragon Ball will be one of the first series to be resumed after such a lengthy layoff.
