Tensions are high in Baltimore after the death of Freddie Gray, who tragically passed away following his arrest last week. Many people are questioning if the Police had any justifiable reason to arrest Mr. Gray in the first place, and are calling for the officers involved to be arrested themselves. Now, an attorney for the six officers involved has laid out the legal justification for Gray’s arrest. Adding further fuel to the fire, Baltimore Fraternal Order of Police president, Gene Ryan, referred to some protesters as a “lynch mob.” Later a very sweaty Ryan, soften the language some, regretting the use of the term.
After the tragic death of Freddie Gray, who was arrested for fleeing from police unprovoked and later died in custody of a severed spine, many have questioned if Police had the right to arrest him in the first place. Now the attorney for the six officers involved,Michael Davey, has laid out the legal grounds for the arrest, telling press (via CNN):
"There is a Supreme Court case that states that if you are in a high-crime area, and you flee from the police unprovoked, the police have the legal ability to pursue you, and that's what they did. In this type of an incident, you do not need probable cause to arrest. You just need a reasonable suspicion to make the stop."
