Netflix’s new Tina Fey series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt makes it clear that females are strong as hell, but some people think that the show isn’t do any favors for people of different races. It seems some publications feel that the show can only lovingly make fun of the stereotypes that plague rich white people, and not apply the same blend of harmless satire to anyone else. Now the show’s, anything but token, black character Titus Burgess (30 Rock, Disney’s The Little Mermaid on Broadway) has opened up about the show’s so-called “major race problem.”
Recently, Tituss Burgess opened up to Huffington Post about Buzzfeed’s suggested “a major race problem:”
"I just think that is so completely unbelievably ridiculous, and I think people are watching it and pulling it apart for all the wrong reasons...All of these storylines come back around and make a delicious point.”
Burges went on to explain just one of the many ways that the show defies stereotypes:
"Kimmy doesn't choose the white man, she chooses Dong. It’s just this bizarre stereotype that white women don't like Asian men."
Ultimately, Titus finds the whole thing funny, adding:
"I just find it hilarious that people are trying to arrest us for doing the opposite of what everyone thinks we're doing."
