Sylvester Stallone will be starring in a new movie with Robert De Niro. Grudge Match, which opens Christmas Day, will feature the two heavyweights fighting it out.
The Warner Brothers flick, which was originally slated for a January 15 release, has now been bumped up to Christmas. The movie company released the new date on Thursday, much to the delight of fans.
Todd Cunningham, contributor to The Wrap, argued that the film couldn’t compete with other new releases scheduled for Christmas Day:
"The Weinstein Company last week shifted its Meryl Streep-Julia Roberts drama August: Osage Count to that date. Already there were Universal’s Keanu Reeves action drama 47 Ronin, Paramount’s Chris Pine-Keira Knightley action thriller Jack Ryan and the Fox comedy The Secret Life of Walter Mitty."
Dan Fellman, current president of Warner Brothers, saw matters a little differently. Fellman is excited about the new flick and thinks it’s going to be a global success:
"Results of our early screenings have been outstanding, giving us every indication that 'Grudge Match' is a movie that can excel during the Christmas play period. With the iconic pairing of De Niro and Stallone, surrounded by such a terrific cast--including comedy greats Kevin Hart and Alan Arkin--we felt it was a perfect opportunity to jump into the holidays and give audiences of all ages a chance to enjoy the movie."
Fans are clammoring to see both actors again. De Niro’s last role included Silver Linings Playbook while Stallone appeared in last summer’s The Expendables 2.
