FBI File On WestBoro Baptist Church Reveals Hate Group Founder Fred Phelps Intentionally Provoked Death Threats

It was recently revealed that well known hate group, The Westboro Baptist Church (Do we really have to keep calling them a Church?) has had an FBI file on them for decades. The file, spanning 250 pages revealed that the bureau determined that founder, Fred Phelps was “intentionally provoking” death threats against himself.

'The Hill' has searched through the 250-page bureau file and are reporting on some of the more interesting tidbits. According to the file,in 1993 The FBI wrote to the U.S. District Attorney, claiming that Fred Phelps was purposely provoking death threats against himself:

“It would appear that Mr. Phelps is intentionally provoking these types of responses. Large amounts of money and investigative time can potentially be wasted investigating these threat letters. Historically, very few, if any, of these types of cases have been prosecuted in the District of Kansas.”

Another agent, whose name was reportedly redacted, went on to add.

“The FBI does have the responsibility to investigate and prevent potential violence against any person regardless of their religious or political views, however.”

What do you think about the report? Should the FBI put more effort into investigating threats against the hate group? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section at the bottom of the page.

The Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps passed away last year at the age of 84. Phelps was reportedly excommunication from the hate group after having a change of heart shortly before his death.
