A year after the fact John Travolta is finally ready to explain just what in the hell happened to him at the Oscars last year that caused him to mispronounce Frozen star Idina Menzel's name so badly. According to the latest gossip news updates, the Pulp Fiction actor got a little flummoxed by Goldie Hawn just prior to walking on stage last year and kind of forgot how to read. That is all well and good, but it looks like we will probably have to wait until the 2016 Academy Awards to find out why he decided to surprise Scarlett Johansson with a creepy kiss on the red carpet.
John Travolta has earned a reputation for acting a bit eccentrically -- among other things --especially since making a fool of himself last year when he inexplicably pronounced Idina Menzel's name as Adele Dazeem at the Oscars.
Finally, the Grease star appeared on Jimmy Kimmel's late night talk show this week to try to help make sense of what happened that night.
Travolta told Kimmel that the reason he forgot how to speak had more to do with Goldie Hawn than it did Idina or how she pronounces her name (via New Daily News):
"The truth is, I was expected back stage, and it was getting very close to the time I was supposed to go on.
"But as I get back stage I run into Goldie Hawn...and I was star struck.
"And I was star struck...and forgetting that I have to go do this bit.
"And then they said, 'You're on...[and] oh by the way, we've changed Idina's name to a phonetic spelling.'"
"So it was a phonetic spelling, but I didn't rehearse it that way."
Sure that make some sense, but it does absolutely nothing to explain away his decision to ambush Scarlett Johansson with a kiss on the red carpet in a moment that the Daily Mail reports inspired many a meme the world over.
We can only hope that Jimmy Kimmel's bookers are already lining up the post-Oscar interview with Travolta to explain himself next year.
