Shailene Woodley, who was set to portray Mary Jane in the upcoming Spider-Man, must not have been so amazing. She will not be returning for the second film.
Woodley, who played the love interest of Spidey, won’t be in the upcoming sequel. The movie, which is set to release in 2014, will not be including the character of Mary Jane at all.
Marc Webb, director of the franchise, decided to focus on another of Peter Parker’s love interests. He issued a statement yesterday:
"I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship. Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her."
Woodley has received critical acclaim for her role in the film The Descendents, is understandably saddened. She issued a statement to Entertainment Weekly:
"Of course I'm bummed, but I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason. MJ only appeared in a few scenes and I wouldn't trade the experience of working with Andrew [Garfield] and Emma [Stone] for three days on set for the world. Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing MJ until the next film."
The character of Mary Jane was scheduled to appear in the sequel. Ms. Woodley even participated in some of the filming process. Her footage, she would later learn, was just a waste of time.
Still, Woodley is excited about the upcoming film and anticipates appearing in the franchise at some point.
