Despite any promises Shonda Rhimes may have made about Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) making it through thick and thin, it seems she has changed her mind. Going into Season 7 the Grey's Anatomy showrunner admitted that there are no sacred cows on the show anymore, and the last solid marriage on the TV show is now going to be in trouble. According to the latest gossip news spoilers updates, it looks like Grey has even been cheating on her husband in tonight's high-anticipated episode.
Things between pretend married couple Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey as Meredith and Derek may have finally come to their inevitable end on the Shondaland empire cornerstone.
In the new sneak peak made available by People, it certainly looks like Mere's own sister caught her in a lie -- exposing her secret relationship to a mystery man yet to be revealed:
"You packed a suitcase full of lingerie, and then you went away for the weekend.
"And Derek called me three times asking where you were.
"Meanwhile, you'd texted me telling me what a great time you were having, so...Whatever you were doing, whoever...he/she/they, whatever... it wasn't with him."
While it may be tempting to quickly dismiss the idea as something that will no doubt be reasonably explained later in the series, Shonda Rhimes, has bent over backwards to let people know that Season 11 may not end the way they've hoped it would (via TVLine):
"I'm not going to say that Meredith and Derek are never going to break up.
"I'm not going to say that simply because we're writing a story and we're on this long, long journey."
Shonda does make a point, however, of explaining that doesn't mean that they are definitely going to divorce either:
"I've learned never to say absolutes about anything anymore."
"People always say, 'Seven seasons ago you said...Well, I didn't think we'd still be here.'"
As long as Grey's can still keep its audience guessing like this from week to week after all this time, let's hope that it gets another decade or two on ABC's Thursday nights.
