Year after year, the Super Bowl is the most watched event on television. In turn, the marketing and advertising during this time is some of the most valuable real estate a company can capitalize on. This year, it looks like YouTube is trying to get in on some of the action. They have several ex-NFL stars doing spots with first time advertiser Wix. The short teaser that features Terrell Owens is especially ironic and funny.
In 2011, Super Bowl XLV became the most viewed program in the history of American television with 111 million viewers. Its only competitors were previous Super Bowls, and the series finale of M.A.S.H.
These ad spots are so expensive that the only companies that can afford a seat are huge corporations like Doritos, Budweiser and Coca-Cola. However, according to Sports Grid, some newcomers are making their way onto the scene:
"Looks like YouTube is trying to get in on some of that hot Super Bowl advertising action this year. So far they've posted a series of promos to their AdBlitz channel for a real website that helps make real websites for fake businesses run by former NFL players: Brett Favre's 'Favre & Carve' BBQ joint, Terrell Owens's "Humble Pies" pie company, Emmitt Smith's 'Double Deuce' line dancing classes..."
The average 30-second Super Bowl sport has a price tag of about $4.5 million dollars. According to the NY Post, investing in Terrell Owens, in particular, was money well spent:
"Terrell Owens has gone from pigskin profits to humble pie...The former NFL star, who was as well known for his off-the-field antics, will appear in a 30-second spot for first-time Super Bowl advertiser Wix. In a teaser for the ad, Owens pumps iron and kisses his muscles in preparation for his post-NFL career as a pie-maker. The spot teams Owens with celeb chef Matt Matheson as they embark on their Humble Pie business."
