Florida State looked to be heading for their second 13-0 season heading into the Rose Bowl. The Seminoles were able to keep it a fairly close game, and heading in the locker rooms at halftime, they were only 5 points behind. However, once the second half got off the ground, The Ducks absolutely dismantled Florida State. Some sources claim that Florida's infamous All-Star, Jamie Winston, is to blame.
Florida only pulled off two field goals in their first three trips to the red zone. The ducks, on the other hand, wanted to move their Heisman Trophy winner, Marcus Mariota, around. To get things started, Mariota handed it off to Royce Freeman who took it over goal line. At the end of the first half, though, Winston and State were still right in it.
Once the coaches had a chance to talk to their players at half time, though, Oregon looked like a whole new team.
It all started when Derrick Malone stripped the ball from Dalvin Cook and Oregon recovered. From that moment on, Florida just could not hold on to the ball. According to Comcast, these turnovers seemed to be the story of the night:
"Touchdown. Turnover. Touchdown. Turnover. Touchdown...And on it went for Oregon. Marcus Mariota and the Ducks are built for speed and in a flash they turned the first College Football Playoff semifinal game into a Rose Bowl rout...The Ducks dusted Florida State 59-20 on Thursday and now it's on to Texas to try to win their first national championship...The second-seeded Ducks scored six straight times they touched the ball in the second half...In a span of 12:54 on the game clock, the score went from 25-20 to 59-20."
The other story of the night was seeing Jameis Winston in such rare form. Over the last two years, he has earned a reputation for his ability to keep calm under pressure. Reported on by The Washington Post, the former Heisman winner finally snapped:
"Until the end, Jameis Winston remained convinced of his own impermeability to reality, to the rules that govern everyone else. The Ducks pressured Winston until, in the game's signature moment, he stumbled backward and fumbled the ball over his head. They ruffled him until he and his coach, Jimbo Fisher, yelled at one another the sideline, Fisher profanely threatening a benching."
Regardless of the cause or who is to blame, the end result is all that matters. So, who do you think will prevail in the National Championship? What are your opinions on the upsets that took place on January 1st? let us know in the comment section below.
