Darren Sharper Faces Life Sentence After Date Rape Scandal; Does Obama's Statement Foreshadow Government Involvement?

Violence and football go hand and hand. However, athletes in the modern age seem to have a tough time leaving their aggression on the field. Ex-NFL star and accused serial rapist, Darren Sharper, has made news yet again, and this time it looks like he will never get out of jail. Also, with President Obama's recent criticisms of Roger Goodell and the NFL fresh in our ears, one begins to wonder if the government will try to insert itself more heavily into professional football.

Darren Sharper played fourteen seasons in the NFL. In 1997, the Green Bay Packers drafted Dharper, however, later he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings and then to the New Orleans Saints.

He was even selected to the pro-bowl five times and was a part of the NFL's 2000 All-Decade Team.

In 2014, the public learned of the real Darren Sharper when he was accused and arrested of multiple sexual assaults.

The ex-NFL star has been in jail ever since, and according to USA Today, it looks like he is going to get a life sentence:

"The serial date rape case against Darren Sharper was starting to grow stale...No trial date. No bail. No new charges...But the stillness shattered Friday with a stunning development in New Orleans that could doom him for life - two new grand jury indictments, including one that charged him with aggravated rape along with two of his cohorts, Erik Nunez and Brandon Licciardi. Both are now alleged accomplices...They are also potential witnesses who could be tempted to testify against Sharper to help avoid life prison sentences of their own."

It is clear that, at this time, the court system has to clean up after Roger Goodell and the rest of the NFL's disciplinary committee. Accoridng to CBS Sports, even President Obama thinks the NFL is doing a poor job:

"It's not just the NFLPA, players and fans who find Roger Goodell's punishment strategy haphazard and capricious. President Barack Obama said on Friday that it seemed like Goodell was making up policy as he was going along when it came to player discipline, particularly former Ravens' running back Ray Rice."

After the atrocities that occurred this year, and the President's statements, it seems that some sort of government interjection could be waiting in 2015. What do you think? Let us know in the comment section below.
