During his 33 seasons as owner of the LA Clippers, Donald Sterling never received the publicity he has over the last two years. If you have been living under rock, he was forced to sell the team after a ridiculous racism scandal, involving V. Stiviano who taped the old man saying incredibly bigoted comments. Now, it looks like he is trying to make up for it (and failing miserably).
In the beginning, Sterling implied that he would do (spend) whatever it took to see the Clippers succeed.
After that, he embarked on an extravagant campaign to ensure a boost in the Clippers' popularity. It is doubtful that at that time he knew he would be kicked from his seat as owner.
The New Yorker has a recap of the situation that earned the mogul the boot:
"You shouldn't have to be Magic Johnson to be welcome, as a black man, at a Los Angeles Clippers game-or anywhere. And yet one of the shocks, for many, of a tape recording in which a man, said to be Donald Sterling, owner of the Clippers, berates a woman identified as V. Stiviano for 'associating with black people' and bringing 'them to my games' is that the fight was apparently triggered when she posted a picture of herself with Magic on Instagram. ('Don't put him on an Instagram... And don't bring him to my games.')"
Since that time, Sterling's racism has earned him the title of most talked about ex-owner in the history of sports.
According to TMZ Sports, it looks like Sterling is trying to make amends:
"The disgraced ex-owner of the Clippers will be in the middle of the Watts Housing Projects on Saturday handing out tons of gifts to kids at the 9th annual Chrismukkah Soirée 'Party in the Projects.'...Donald reached out to Youth Mentoring Kids -- the group organizing the event...Sterling's blatant attempt to makeover his image in the black community isn't fooling anyone -- but at least underprivileged kids will benefit."
