Protests of alleged police brutality seem to be picking up more and more speed each day, following the tragedy of the Ferguson shooting, which has dominated the news cycle for quite a while now. In addition, many professional athletes from the NFL and NBA, including Reggie Bush and Lebron James, have recently shown public support against the death of Eric Garner.
Eric Garner was a 43-year-old male living in New York City. While in Staten Island, he encountered the police and was put in a chokehold that ended his life. The hold caused Garner to have neck and chest compressions, until he eventually passed.
According to the medial examiner, the complications were intensified by Garner's weight, asthma and cardiovascular disease.
The outcome appears to many as a tough verdict for someone who was only under the suspension of selling cigarettes. Garner's last words were "I can't breathe," and according to ABC News, many professional athletes have begun to show public of displays of support against the wrongful death:
"Several professional athletes over the weekend showed their solidarity with demonstrators protesting a New York grand jury's decision to not indict a police officer in the death of Eric Garner by wearing t-shirts that read 'I Can't Breathe.' Detroit Lions running back Reggie Bush wore one during warm-ups ahead of his game Sunday. 'I can't breathe' were the last words of Garner, who died while being placed in a chokehold as he was being arrested."
The show of support doesn't end with Bush or the NFL. According to TMZ Sports, Ballers from them NBA posed with Jay Z to show support:
"[Kevin Garnet] wore the "I Can't Breathe" shirt on the floor and posed for a pic with Jay Z who was dressed in black to show his support for Eric Garner. LeBron and Cavs teammates Kyrie Irving also wore the shirt during their pre-game warm-up [even though] NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has expressed reservations about player participating in the protest on the court..."
