ABC ‘Once Upon A Time’ New Mid-Season Finale Spoilers: Queens of Darkness ‘True Blood’s’ Kristin Bauer ‘Maleficent,’ ‘Little Mermaid’ Ursula Merrin Dungey and ‘101’ Cruella De Vil Victoria Smurfit

ABC’s Once Upon A Time is all new this weekend with its mid-season finale. Frozen is over and that means there is a new villain on scene, or make that three. True Blood’s Kristin Bauer van Straten is reprising her role as Maleficent, and this time she is bringing a few friends, The Little Mermaid’s Ursula (Merrin Dungey) and 101 Dalmations' Cruella De Vil (Victoria Smurfit).

The official plot synopsis for Sunday's all new mid-season finale of Once Upon A Time, titled "Heroes and Villains," reads:

“Anna and Elsa return home and Regina faces a tough choice in the wake of the Snow Queen's spell. Meanwhile, Gold's quest puts Hook's fate in jeopardy; and back in the past, an intrusion at Rumplestiltskin's castle has repercussions for the future.”

The episode features the return of True Blood’s Kristin Bauer van Straten as Maleficent.

This time around the Sleeping Beauty villain will be joined by her fellow Queens of Darkness, Ursula (Merrin Dungey) and Cruella De Vil (Victoria Smurfit).

Recently, Once Upon A Time executive producer, Edward Kitsis, spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the direction for the second half of the season:

“For this one, we saw in the first half of the season that Regina (Lana Parrilla) was really questioning whether or not villains could get happy endings. So we knew we wanted the second half to be villains in search of their happy endings.”

Kitsis went on to explain how they picked their dream team of evil queens:

“We always wanted to bring Maleficent back. We thought, ‘What is the greatest team of evil we could gather to go up against?’ Ursula we teased in the Ariel (Joanna Garcia Swisher) episode last year, and then Cruella, for a while, we just always wanted to bring her on the show and couldn’t figure out how because in the movie, she was kind of ’50s. You always want to put your twist on it. For us, Cruella just fit into this trio of terror.”
