62-year-old Mickey Rourke won an exhibition-boxing match in Russia against Elliot Seymour , 29. However, there is a lot of controversy about the details of the victory. Some evidence suggests that the whole thing was a sham and that Seymour was paid to throw the fight. Seymour is now speaking out and adamantly supporting the legitimacy of the showdown.
Elliot Seymour apparently trained at the same gym as Rourke and local residents around the fitness center know Elliot to be living in poverty and squalor.
This has reportedly been going on for a while; in turn, it would make sense that a wealthy Hollywood actor and his entourage would come up with such a scheme. Daily Mail raises suspicions:
"Elliot Seymour, the man who lost to Rourke on Friday, is a homeless drifter who trained at the same Hollywood gym Rourke and was paid to fly to Russia to make the actor 'look good'. Seymour, who at 29 is 33 years younger than the 62-year-old actor, went down in the second round of the match. He had a shocking record of losing 9-1 of his 10 previous professional bouts."
The circumstances of the fight do seem suspicious. Rourke looks rough during the fight, and the contact between the two is questionable at best.
Still, according to TMZ Sports, Seymour is sticking to the script:
"Mickey Rourke's 29-year-old opponent Elliott Seymour is adamant he wasn't paid to take a dive in their big boxing match in Russia this weekend. Almost everyone who's seen the fight has called BS on the 'knockout' ... with Seymour going down for the count in the 2nd round after a [weak body shot] But Seymour...says, 'The fight wasn't thrown. I only had one month to train.' Seymour confirmed reports that he's struggling financially and has been living on the streets -- but says he was paid to fight ... not to lose."
The report goes on to say that Seymour brought in about a $3000 dollar purse for the show.
Given his living situation, it doesn't seem too far of a stretch that Elliot may have considered throwing the fight. However, there is no evidence to prove otherwise at this time.
