According to the latest gossip news updates, Matt Lauer forced NBC execs to fire Today show boss Jamie Horowitz, but it had nothing to do with saving the jobs of co-hosts Savannah Gutherie and Natalie Morales. Word has it Lauer got wind that Horowitz was planning to also fire him from the cast if the ratings didn't soon overtake Good Morning America's -- that's when Lauer had him fired faster than you can say, "Anne Curry's ghost" .
News went round last week that Matt Lauer staged a late night coup -- overthrowing recently appointed Today showrunner Jamie Horowitz -- in order to keep some of his coworkers from getting canned.
A inside source with all the backstage deets claims in In Touch's December 8, issue, that is wasn't Savannah and Natalie's jobs that Lauer was worried about.
According to the informant, word got out that Horowitz also planned to sack Matt, which led to Lauer striking first:
"It was self-preservation. He complained to NBC brass and got Horowitz fired instead!
"Matt is like the godfather at Today, the fixer when everybody else has a problem...But make no mistake he puts himself first.
"This is the most chaotic time in the shows history...He did it to save his own back."
As thrilled as the Today show crew presumably are with the Lauer these days, it's said that if the One Direction crew never see him again it will be too soon.
A disgruntled want-to-be rep for 1D told Perez Hilton that Matt's comments that bandmate Zayn Malik was absent due to issue related to drug abuse were unacceptable:
"They did not know that they were going to be put on the spot like that and had they have known, they would have never done Today...It was incredibly unprofessional of Matt and management is furious!
"One Direction are threatening that they will never go on the Today show again!"
