Filmmaker and Master of Horror John Carpenter Releases Debut Album Titled 'Lost Themes,' Upcoming Movie Screening and Talk at BAM

The king of all things horror, John Carpenter, will be releasing his first album "Lost Themes" via Sacred Bones Records. Carpenter also revealed that he will release a digital edition featuring exclusive remixes by Zola Jesus and Dean Hurley, Blanck Mass, Bill Kouligas, Silent Servant, ohGr (Skinny Puppy) and J.G. Thirlwell.Additionally, Carpenter will be making a rare New York appearance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music Feb. 5 to celebrate the release of his debut album. He will be joined by Brooke Gladstone, host of NPR’s "On the Media," for a wide-ranging discussion about his legendary film career and his musical endeavors.Boasting “one of the most consistent and coherent bodies of work in modern cinema” (Kent Jones, "Film Comment"), Carpenter injects B-movie genres — horror, sci-fi, action — with the bravura stylistic technique of classical Hollywood giants like Howard Hawks, John Ford and Alfred Hitchcock and composes the scores for nearly all his films. "Lost Themes" features music that could easily compliment any of his well-known thrillers.In conjunction with his BAM appearance, the academy will be presenting a monthlong retrospective titled “John Carpenter: Master of Fear.” The film series includes Carpenter's best-known films such as "Halloween," "The Thing," "Escape from New York" and "Starman" as well as lesser-known gems like "Assault on Precinct 13" and "They Live."

    Brazilian vocalist and cellist Dom La Nena has announced a new album titled "SOYO" via Six Degrees Records, which will be released March 3. Co-produced by La Nena and Brazilian composer/singer/guitarist Marcelo Camelo, "SOYO" is the follow-up to her debut album, "Ela."La Nena’s first album got the 25-year-old a lot of attention. NPR hailed it as a “sonic masterpiece” and has drawn comparisons such as “a young Brian Wilson” ("Wall Street Journal"), “a burnished, bossa Joanna Newsom” ("Time Out New York") and “the shadow of Lhasa” ("Voir"). "The New York Times" wrote, “[Dom La Nena] joins the sorority of whisperers that includes singers like Juana Molina, Hope Sandoval and Jane Birkin.”Co-produced by La Nena and Brazilian songwriter Marcelo Camelo, formerly of the Brazilian band Los Hermanos, the album features long, wandering melodies ornamented by cellos, pianos and other chamber folk elements coming and going throughout.Recorded in Lisbon, Paris and Mexico City; mixed in Sao Paolo; and mastered in Miami, "SOYO" is international to its core. This is something La Nena reflects in her music, with tales of vast distances, longing and nostalgia.
  • K-Pop Sensation Changmin of 2AM Appointed Professor at South Korean University

    Changmin, singer for the popular South Korean boy band 2AM, has been appointed as the applied music education professor at Sohae University in Gunsan, North Jeolla, South Korea.According to a statement released by university officials, the school hired Changmin due to his experience as a vocal coach and his vocal talent. They also hope the singer will become an inspiration to their students.“We highly regard Lee Changmin’s experience as a vocal trainer before making his debut as an idol star. He has experience as both a vocal trainer and a singer. Many take years of trainee practice to even debut as a singer, but Changmin made his debut in just a few months. That was possible because of his talented vocal skills,” said university officials in the statement.Changmin’s experience as a singer began in 2008 when he made his successful debut through JYP Entertainment's ballad boy group 2AM. But Changmin was a successful voice coach before joining the band. In 2010, 2AM received Digital Album Awards at the 25th Golden Disk Awards with their song “Can’t Let You Go Even If I Die.”
