How many of the late, great Claudio Abbado recordings have we yet to discover?
Undoubtedly, there will be a rush of unreleased or reissued material, but Deutsche Grammophon has just brought out a new piano concertos album from 2013.
And it has already been named "Editor's Choice Disc of the Month" by Gramophone.
The pianist is long-time Abbado collaborator and general genius Martha Argerich. The pair play Mozart's 20th and 25th piano concertos, with the Orchestra Mozart Bologna (itself a passion project of Abbado's, its founder).
One link between the pieces is that neither was released for publication by Mozart, instead intended for private performances for true music lovers.
Which is, in a way, rather lovely. And apt.
Because Abbado's finest performances have always felt at once open to all and--in the best way--on a rarified plane attained by only the very finest artists.
