A public commemoration of the life of Maestro Claudio Abbado will be livestreamed from La Scala Opera House on Monday, January 27. Abbado, 80, passed away on Monday after a long illness.
Daniel Barenboim, La Scala's music director, will lead La Scala's Philharmonic Orchestra in the "Funeral March" from Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 at 6:00 p.m. in Milan, which is noon E.S.T.
The event will be streamed live on La Scala's website and also on YouTube.
The orchestra will perform to an empty house, a tradition at La Scala dating back to the death of Arturo Toscanini in 1957. The general public is invited to listen to the performance, which will also be broadcast to the square outside the opera house.
La Scala said in a statement that it was "proud that this will be taking place on behalf and in memory of Claudio Abbado," a conductor "celebrated globally as one of the most significant and popular musicians of the last 50 years."
Abbado served as music director of La Scala from 1968 to 1986. During his long career, Abbado also led the Vienna State Opera and the Berlin Philharmonic, making many guest appearances throughout the world.
