The New Group has announced its star-studded 2024-25 season of shows, with four productions scheduled to play at the Pershing Square Signature Center next year.
The New Group's 2024-25 season will feature the New York premiere of Sam Shepard's 'Curse of the Starving Class,' starring Christian Slater, Calista Flockhart, and Cooper Hoffman (Paul Thomas Anderson's 'Licorice Pizza,' son of Philip Seymour Hoffman), with Jessica Goldberg's 'Babe,' starring Oscar winner Marisa Tomei.
The first play of the theater's 2024-25 30th anniversary season will feature Tomei in the lead role. Tomei will play a music producer in Goldberg's 'Babe,' directed by The New Group's founding artistic director, Scott Elliot.
Tomei will be forced to reconsider the sacrifices she made in her career to support her husband, a more famous producer. The play, produced in collaboration with Red Yes Studio, will be performed at the Pershing Square Signature Center in the fall.
The production company's next project is a revival of Sam Shepard's 'Curse of the Starving Class.' The drama, first produced in 1977, follows the Tate family fighting to hold onto their rundown family farm. Elliott will direct the show, which opens in the winter of 2025. It will also play at the Signature Center.
Other productions in The New Group's 2024-25 season include a new musical from the creators of the renowned pandemic Zoom play 'Circle Jerk' called 'The Last Bimbo of the Apocalypse.' The musical, which Michael Breslin and Patrick Foley wrote, centers on three Gen Zers determined to discover what happened to Coco, a one-hit wonder in the early 2000s. The performance will start in the spring of 2025 at the Signature Center.
The playwright and director Nazareth Hassan's 'Bowl EP' will be the final production of the theater company's 24-25 season. The show will include two young rappers with their original music. Bowl EP is a co-production with Vineyard Theatre and National Black Theatre and will run at the Vineyard Theatre.
