Lucy Kirkwood's 'The Welkin' will end its extended Off-Broadway run on Sunday, July 7, at Atlantic Theater Company.
The production began performances on Thursday, May 16, and officially opened at the Off-Broadway company on Wednesday, June 12, at the Linda Gross Theater. Sarah Benson directed the play, originally scheduled to run through Tuesday, June 30.
The play is about a young woman sentenced to June 12 in rural England in 1759. As the nation waits for Halley's comet to return, 12 ordinary women are gathered to assess if she is speaking the truth when she tries to break free of the noose by claiming to be pregnant. It is a dark, fierce, funny play about democracy and housework.
'The Welkin' cast members include Tilly Botsford, Paige Gilbert (A Raisin in the Sun, Skin of Our Teeth), Ann Harada (Into the Woods, Avenue Q), Jenn Kidwell (Underground Railroad Game), Mary McCann (Harper Regan), Emily Cass McDonnell (I'm Revolting, The Thin Place), MacKenzie Mercer (Frozen), Sandra Oh (The Sympathizer, Quiz Lady), Dale Soules (Orange Is The New Black, Hair), Danny Wolohan (Camelot, To Kill a Mockingbird), Haley Wong (Mary Gets Hers), Hannah Cabell (The Father), Glenn Fitzgerald (The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window), Nadine Malouf (Grief Hotel), Susannah Perkins (The Wolves), and Simone Recasner (Ain't No Mo').
Furthermore, the production features set by dots, costumes by Kaye Voyce, hair and wigs by Cookie Jordan, makeup by Gabrielle Vincent, sound by Palmer Hefferan, lighting by Stacey Derosier, special effects by Jeremy Chernick, movement by David Neumann, and intimacy director by Crista Marie Jackson and casting by The Tesly Office. Amanda Spooner served as the stage manager of the production.
