London will host a stage production of 'Hercules' based on the 1997 Disney animated film. The musical is scheduled to debut in the West End in the summer of 2025 at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
Two-time Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw will direct and choreograph, with co-choreography by Tanisha Scott. Nicholaw and Scott joined the project for its German production, which is currently playing at Hamburg's Theater Neue Flora.
Tony Award winners Robert Horn and Kwame Kwei-Armah wrote the book for 'Hercules,' which has music and lyrics by Alan Menken and David Zippel (who wrote the music and lyrics for the original film).
The story follows the demigod with superhuman strength who serves as the novel's title character as he sets out to find his identity and place in the world.
He must prove his strength and worth for a divine position at Mount Olympus. Hercules's mortal girlfriend, Meg, and his evil uncle, Hades, who desires Hercules's destruction, will complicate the situation.
Disney classics like 'Go the Distance,' 'I Won't Say (I'm In Love),' and 'Zero to Hero' are featured in the soundtrack.
The 'Hercules' musical premiered in the US as a 2019 outdoor staging in New York at the Delacorte Theater, followed by a 2023 performance in New Jersey at Paper Mill Playhouse. Lear deBessonet directed both iterations.
Furthermore, the Drury Lane, which will house 'Hercules' in the West End, is currently home to Disney's 'Frozen,' which will close on Sunday, September 8.
Dates and casting for the London production are yet to be announced.
