The 35 shows now running at the Broadway box office had a 2.33% increase last week, contributing to a cumulative revenue of $36.9 million in the previous week of grosses data before the Sunday, June 16 Tony Awards were announced.
The Broadway box office continues to rise as more shows open for the 2023-2024 season. The 26 running productions earned $28,519,828 for the week ending Sunday, March 24, an increase of 1.64% from the week before. Attendance also increased, with 229,911 people taking in a Broadway show with an average admission of $124.05 (up $3.52).
Despite knowing this year's big winners, it is still a little surprising to see 'Cabaret' lose the Best Revival of a Musical to 'Merrily We Roll Along,' handily beating the Sondheim revival at the box office. 'The Outsiders,' which won Best Musical, was the 15th-highest-grossing show of the week.
In its penultimate week on the boards, the Circle in the Square Theatre broke box office records with an increase in grosses headed by 'An Enemy of the People' last week. With his recent Tony Award win, Jeremy Strong, the lead in the revival, may achieve even more success in its previous week on Broadway.
Tony Award winner Ben Platt also noticed a rise in attendance in the last week of his stay at the Palace. Although it did not break into The $1 Million Club, the number of seats filled increased by nearly 13% over the previous week. At the recently restored Palace Theatre, 94.18% of the seats were occupied for his final performances.
Furthermore, it feels like summer is officially here as both 'The Lion King' and 'Wicked' made it into The $2 Million Club last week. Among the top five highest-grossing films were 'Merrily We Roll Along,' 'Hamilton,' and 'Cabaret.'
