On Sunday, June 16, 'The Outsiders,' a musical based on S.E. Hinton's coming-of-age novel, won the Tony Award for Best Musical at the 77th Annual Tony Awards.
The show took home four awards, including Danya Taymor winning Best Direction of a Musical, Brian MacDevitt and Hana S. Kim winning Best Lighting Design, and Cody Spencer winning Best Sound Design. With the victory, producer Angelina Jolie has also won her first Tony.
The musical follows Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and their chosen family as they struggle to live in 1967 Oklahoma as teenagers from Tulsa. The cast members of the show include Tony nominees Brady Grant as Ponyboy Curtis, Sky Lakota-Lynch as Johnny Cade, Joshua Boone as Dallas Winston, Brent Comer as Darrel Curtis, Jason Schmidt as Sodapop Curtis, Emma Pittman as Cherry Valance, Darryl Tofa as Two-Bit Matthews, Dan Berry as Paul Holden, and Kevin William Paul as Bob Sheldon.
Taymor, whose aunt is Julie Taymor, the first woman to win a Tony Award for directing a musical, became the 11th woman to win the award for 'The Outsiders.'
According to CBC News, she said, "Thank you to the great women who have lifted me up."
The musical is playing at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, which opened on Thursday, April 11. La Jolla Playhouse hosted its world premiere in the spring of 2023.
Furthermore, Tony Award winners Justin Levine and Adam Rapp co-wrote the book, and Levine and the folk duo Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) composed the music. The show includes scenic design by AMP and Tatiana Kahvegian, costume design by Tony nominee Sarafina Bush, lighting design by Tony winner Brian MacDevitt, sound design by Cody Spencer, and projection design by Hana S. Kim.
