'Wicked' star Idina Menzel will return to Broadway next year as part of the 2024-2025 season in 'Redwood,' a new musical written and directed by Tony Award nominee Tina Landau with music by Kate Diaz and lyrics by Diaz and Landau.
'Redwood' is conceived by Landau and Menzel, with additional contributions by Menzel. Dates and a venue are yet to be announced.
In a statement, Menzel expressed her excitement to be returning to Broadway, and the fact that she gets to do 'Redwood,' which she shared is a musical that means so much to her that makes it even more special.
"This show has lived in my bones for 15 years, from the very first time Tina and I discussed working together. Finally, getting to do it on Broadway is really a dream come true," she added.
In the play, Menzel plays the role of Jesse, a successful entrepreneur, mother, and wife who appears to have it all, but her heart is broken. At a turning point, Jesse leaves everyone behind and drives to the ancient forests of Northern California, where she meets someone by chance and takes a leap of faith that will change her life forever.
Menzel is best recognized for her Tony-winning roles as original Elphaba in 'Wicked' and Maureen Johnson in 'Rent.' Her Broadway works include 'If/Then' (a Tony Award nominee) and 'Aida.'
She is also best known for being the voice of Elsa in the Disney films 'Frozen' and 'Frozen 2.' Menzel's next concert tour in North America will feature a preview of songs from the 'Redwood' soundtrack.
Additional casting and creative team members will be announced at a later date.
Furthermore, Loudmouth Media, Eva Price, and Caroline Kaplan will produce the Broadway musical.
