On Wednesday, May 29, Indian-American singer-songwriter Zeshan B announced his upcoming album, 'O Say, Can You See?'
The thirteen-song album, set to be released on Friday, July 26, combines Chicago soul and R&B with jazz improvisation, classical orchestrations, gospel music, and the Urdu music that Zeshan grew up listening to.
The executive who produced the album is former US Attorney for New York's Southern District, Preet Bharara, passionate about social justice and bringing people together through arts.
Zeshan said, "All Preet's life, he has fought for justice in the courtroom. All my life, I've fought for justice with a microphone."
The upcoming album's tracks were composed during some of the most significant "low points" in modern American history, such as George Floyd's murder, the 2020 election, the January 6 riot, and the day Roe v. Wade was overturned.
Despite dealing with challenging topics, every song is filled with bravery and hope for the future. The album was recorded live in Brooklyn, New York.
Bharara claimed that he has always valued passionate voices, and Zeshan's commitment to justice through music resonates deeply with him. He said their collaboration on the album has been a profoundly inspiring and unforeseen journey in his career.
He added that he takes great pride in what they have created together. He noted that he looks forward to watching Zeshan foster community through song.
Along with the announement, Zeshan released the lead single, 'On My Own,' which he co-wrote with Michael McAllister. McAllister also arranged every song on the album.
With vocals from the renowned Resistance Revival Chorus, concertmaster Antoine Silverman's chamber orchestra, Aaron Kotler on wurlitzer, MacAllister on guitar and bass, Will Clark on drums, and Michael Caterisano on percussion, 'On My Own' is an ode to the often elusive feeling of home and belonging.
The official music video, filmed throughout Chicago, is directed by Michael Fernandez and stars award-winning choreographer Farlanda Buchannon.
