Music Will, formerly known as Little Kids Rock, successfully held its 16th annual benefit concert at LA's The Novo venue last April 24, celebrating its transformative music education mission with a star-studded performance lineup.
This year, the event honored Tony, Emmy, and five-time Grammy-nominated singer, actor, and philanthropist Josh Groban; Grammy and Golden Globe-winning singer and actress Andra Day; and MacArthur "Genius" grant recipient, and composer of opera, ballet, and film Rhiannon Giddens.
The benefit also featured music direction from Michael Bearden and stellar performances from Groban, Day, and Giddeons, alongside Taj Mahal, Yancyabril, and Music Will school program participants from Miramonte Elementary School, Verdugo Hills High School, and the Harman-sponsored alumni band, Los Riot.
Music Will Benefit 2024 Awards
In addition to being a night of top-notch performances, the benefit concert also acknowledged each honoree's cultural achievements that were made possible through music.
For one, Groban was awarded the Impact Award for his dedication as a champion for the arts through his Find Your Light Foundation. His work particularly made a profound impact on countless children as it empowered them to discover and pursue their newfound passion for music.
Lois Hunter presented the award to Groban for his career-long mission of creating music that inspires and moves people.
For Day, on the other hand, the benefit event awarded her the Spirit Award for the remarkable talent and spirit she brings forth in everything she does, from her chart-topping hits to her transformative role in the film, "The United States vs. Billie Holiday."
She has captured and inspired the hearts of millions around the world, encouraging positive change, and was exemplified on benefit night with an inaugural performance of her new single: "Chasing."
Joe Batie, her father, presented the award to Day, who will be working with Music Will to expand its programming to cover 20 schools in San Diego and Detroit.
Lastly, Riddens received the Ambassador Award which recognizes her as a global ambassador for music that promoted cultural understanding, unity, and collaboration through her work.
It commemorates her mission in pulling to the forefront of American musical history the voices that would otherwise be obscured. Presented to Giddens by Mahal, the award reflects her role not only as a music ambassador but also as an accurate representative of cultural heritage.
