Last Tuesday, April 2, Virginia-born and LA-based songwriter, producer, and genre-crossing artist Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams shared his take on the 1967 R&B classic "Count The Days," featuring a vocal performance from American singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis.
This advance single comes off of Swamp Dogg's forthcoming album "Blackgrass: From West Virginia to 125th St," his debut record with Oh Boy Records that will be out on May 31.
Swamp Dogg's reenvisioned version of the original by Inez and Charlie Foxx arrives alongside a quaint music video that offers a peek behind the recording of the newest single at Nashville's Sound Emporium.
About Swamp Dogg's 'Count The Days'
Explaining his rationale behind tackling an old classic, Swamp Dogg said: "I figured, once a hit, always a hit-and this song has been a hit three times with Inez and Charlie Foxx, Joss Stone, and Gene Pitney."
"After hearing Jenny Lewis' voice, I knew it was destined to be a hit again," he continued.
Swamp Dogg's "Count The Days" follows up the release of his lead single, "Mess Under That Dress," which has already accrued critical acclaim from the likes of BrooklynVegan, Exclaim, Stereogum, and The New York Times.
In addition to this particular release, the artist also premiered the feature-length documentary "Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted" last month at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference 2024, receiving rave reviews from The Austin Chronicle and The Hollywood Reporter.
Rolling Stone also chimed in with its own praise by including Swamp Dogg's showcase in its Best of SXSW roundup, saying, "Swamp Dogg sounded bold and robust, his vigor encouraging his band to ratchet up the energy... every musician on stage was locked into an undeniable groove."
