Christopher Durang, a playwright known for penning absurdist comedy in his productions, has recently been announced as the 2024 recipient of The Dramatists Guild of America's (DGA's) Lifetime Achievement Award.
Honored at The Dramatists Guild of America's 2024 Awards Ceremony
The award will be presented in the Guild's upcoming annual awards ceremony on May 6 to be held at New York's Sony Hall concert venue and is given in recognition of a distinguished lifetime achievement in theatrical writing.
The recipients of the Guild's other prestigious awards are set to be announced at a later date, which includes the Hull-Warriner, Loewe, Horton Foote, Lanford Wilson, and Flora Roberts Awards.
Of Durang's upcoming ceremony, Dramatists Guild's Awards Committee Chairman Lloyd Suh said: "It's a privilege to celebrate Christopher Durang with the Dramatists Guild's highest honor, in recognition of his singular voice and his enduring impact on generations of other writers."
"His grace, wit, charm, and generosity are an example to all of us in the community of American dramatists," he continued.
The Guild has been professionally representing playwrights, librettists, lyricists, and composers working for stages across America since it was founded in 1919.
As for Durang, he has been part of the association since 1981, authoring works like "Why Torture Is Wrong And The People Who Love Them," and "Vanya and Sonya and Masha and Spike", among others, the latter of which has won the Tony Award for Best Play and The Guuild's Hull-Warriiner award.
Shelly Mellott, President of the screenwriting application Final Draft, said of Durang's award: "Christopher Durang is one of today's most luminous talents, and Final Draft is delighted to support the Dramatists Guild of America as they recognize his distinguished career."
